A variant that had occurred to me is to set things up so that some
wizards could have a form of influence over certain animals. So, for
example, wizard "Ratface" might have influence over rats, and could
send one to spy on someone/something, or to similarly deliver a message.
Sort of like having pets/followers, but more inclusive.
