I think earlier responses to your rather unpleasant and
post were pretty good, so I'll just settle for a few notes:

1 - I am not upset at all that these cannot be used to make money.

2 - I know of far too many people who quit the admin/imp side of
mudding but wouldn't have if they might have been able at least
to ask for donations, or possibly charge a small fee.

3 - As far as I am concerned, people who wish to continue using
the restricted code bases are totally free to do so.

But for those of us who probably won't be hired for the next
EverQuest, UO, Asheron's Call, or even Dragon Realms project,
I submit that it would be better for all of us if more and better
options were available without these restrictions. There are
many who could write it from scratch, and many are doing so.

But there are plenty who could not, though they would still
be able to make modifications and do quite well. These people
could benefit from a stronger emphasis on the code bases which
give the greater freedom to charge, or not, to ask for donations,
or not, to perhaps even make back a few dollars, or not.

As it is, the restricted code bases do not give this option.
