LPC went thru a rather heavy bout of optimisation a while back
(Hollenbeck et al).  The results were impressive, and rather, umm,
unjustifiable (the ratio of code size and complexity versus
performance).  I don't have any absolute figures to hand, but you
should be able to find references on rec.games.mud.lp and *.pike.
