OpenStep is not exactly dead:

Per Rick Moen(?) checkin and patch rates to GnuStep projects have
increased near exponentially in the last years.

The DPS extension for XFree86 is neat, especially given the pain
that is the current X11 renderer.  

At one point one of the GnuStep principles was active on MUD-Dev,
mostly (IIRC) in regard to CORBA.
