[MUD-Dev] Building community in social M**s

There's been discussion on what keeps people interested in "gaming
oriented" MUDs, but I'm wondering what keeps people coming back to
social M**s?  Are people even in character most of the time?  What
keeps them in character?  In social M**s where there isn't a strong
theme -- although there is a strong sense of embodiment and place --
what keeps them coming back?  Are there any social M**s people would
suggest I check out on my own?
