I'll confess that one had me laughing aloud and still gives me chuckles.

I should clarify.

Writing as list owner:

Advertising is not allowed in the list. This is one of the few hard
  rules on MUD-Dev.

However, I realise that some posters use services which automatically
append advertising to their posts (eg MSN, Hotmail, Yahoo, etc) or
work at companies whose mail systems append (or whose policies
require) disclaimers (ie adverts) on their posts. There's no gain for
me or the list to argue with that 800lb gorilla. As part of
moderation I remove such adverts. Largely, this gets done

If this causes problems with your company. Sorry. Don't post from
your company address. Not my problem. The comment about my living
room and bullhorns on the list page is meant in earnest. I promise
no distribution controls, and accept no distribution limitations
    provided in messages (ie post-shrinkwrap).

More simply: don't worry about it. The only advertising that I get
upset about and will stomp on are attempts to make the contents of
list posts advertising. That's not what the list is for. The
automatic stuff is merely an annoyance that is adequately handled by
little scripts that are just automatic as the ones that added the
  adverts to your messages.
