But are you trying to write a game or promote a technology? You want
to be careful not to deviate from your primary goal(which I assume
is to present an engaging environment for people to spend their time
in).

I personally am not a mud developer, I write IVR and call center
apps. (I get a lot of good info on large scale multi-user
environments from here). But as a developer I know the last thing I
want to do is have my user struggle with technology. It detracts
them from their goal of using the software. It forces them to think
about something other then the task at hand.

The more they struggle with technology the less likely your product
will gain acceptance.
