I noticed the thread dragging on and on over at vworld-tech, and it
did leave me wondering whether it is really necessary to talk telnet
in order to support telnet clients. You should be able to use your
OS's standard telnet server implementation, and add a gateway
program to your MUD server instead of the OS's authentication or
login program. You no longer have to talk telnet commands, and can
instead use the OS's terminal control API.

I would also be interested in knowing how many dedicated MUD clients
end up talking telnet under the hood.
